no journal, ,

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has fabricated a test coil to evaluate superconducting performance of the conductor used for Central Solenoid (CS) of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) system. The coil is a 9-turn single layer solenoid coil with a 1.5-m diameter and will be inserted and tested in the Central Solenoid Model Coil (CSMC) test facility in JAEA. The conductor is cable-in-conduit type and has a square shape of 49 mm. The cable is composed of 576 Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands and 288 copper strands. The conductor will be operated at 13-T magnetic field and 40 kA operating current. Fabrication sequence of the coil is; (1) winding of 1.5 m diameter, (2) fabrication of terminals, (3) heat treatment to generate superconductor, (4) turn insulation, (5) ground insulation, (6) assemble of structures and (7) installation of instruments. Before fabrication of the coil, trial coil was fabricated using a dummy conductor to demonstrate fabrication procedure. Fabrication results of trial and the test coil will be presented.

Nuclear data benchmark experiment on titanium with DT neutrons

Ota, Masayuki; Takakura, Kosuke; Ochiai, Kentaro; Sato, Satoshi; Konno, Chikara

no journal, ,

We performed a benchmark experiment with a titanium assembly and a DT neutron source at JAEA/FNS. The assembly was a titanium slab of 45 cm $$times$$ 45 cm $$times$$ 40 cm covered with 5 or 10 cm thick Li$$_{2}$$O blocks. Dosimetry reaction rates were measured by the foil activation method of niobium, indium and gold inside the assembly. And fission rate of $$^{235}$$U was measured by using micro fission chambers. This experiment was analyzed by using Monte Carlo neutron transport code MCNP5 with recent nuclear data libraries of ENDF/B-VII.1, JEFF-3.1.2, JENDL-4.0, etc. The calculation results were compared with the measured one in order to validate nuclear data libraries of titanium.

FENDL-3.0 benchmark test with iron and concrete shielding experiments for quasi mono-energetic 40 MeV neutrons at JAEA/TIARA

Konno, Chikara; Ota, Masayuki; Ochiai, Kentaro; Sato, Satoshi

no journal, ,

IAEA released a new version of Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (FENDL), FENDL-3.0 in 2012 in order to extend the neutron energy range of neutron-induced reactions from 20 MeV to more than 60 MeV. We have carried out benchmark tests of the general purpose data library for neutron-induced reactions in FENDL-3.0 by using iron and concrete shielding experiments with the 40 MeV quasi mono-energetic neutron source at TIARA in JAEA. As a result, it was found out that the calculations with FENDL-3.0 agreed with the measured ones for the iron experiment well, while they overestimated the measured ones for the concrete experiment more for the thicker assemblies. We specified that the smaller non-elastic scattering cross sections of $$^{16}$$O caused the overestimation in the calculation with FENDL-3.0 for the concrete experiment. The $$^{16}$$O data in FENDL-3.0 should be revised.

no journal, ,

JAEA has to responsibly procure nine Toroidal Field (TF) coils as Japanese domestic agency. To manufacture the TF coil, full-scale trials (manufacturing of dummy DPs) is carrying out as a qualification of the manufacturing process. From October in 2013, the manufacturing of the first TF coil was started. In this presentation, results of full-scale trials and progress of the TF coil manufacturing are reported.

Progress of activities in the IFMIF/EVEDA lithium test loop, 2-1; EVEDA Li test loop operational test

Kondo, Hiroo; Kanemura, Takuji; Furukawa, Tomohiro; Hirakawa, Yasushi; Wakai, Eiichi

no journal, ,

EVEDA (Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activity) Li Test Loop, which simulates the hydraulic condition of the Li target and the purification system of the IFMIF Li facility, is under operation in a frame work of the IFMIF/EVEDA. The Li target at a velocity of 15 m/s in a pressurized (0.12 MPa) was validated. In addition, a cold trap was tested and finally operation at 200$$^{circ}$$C (target value) was validated.

Progress of activities in the IFMIF/EVEDA lithium test loop, 2-2; Thickness measurement of Li target

Kanemura, Takuji; Kondo, Hiroo; Furukawa, Tomohiro; Hirakawa, Yasushi; Hoashi, Eiji*; Yoshihashi, Sachiko*; Horiike, Hiroshi*; Wakai, Eiichi

no journal, ,

A high-speed (15 m/s) liquid lithium jet is planned to be utilized as the target of two 40 MeV - 125 mA deuteron beams in the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility. The target thickness is required to be maintained within 25 $$pm$$ 1 mm under a vacuum condition of 10$$^{-3}$$ Pa. At present, measurements of the Li target thickness at the velocities of up to 20 m/s under an Ar pressure of 10$$^{-3}$$ Pa $$sim$$ 0.12 MPa have been finished. The target was found to be approx. 26 mm in thickness on average at the velocity of 15 m/s under a pressure of 0.12 MPa in the region of interest. As for temporal variation, average wave amplitude was 0.3 mm under the same condition in the same region. Therefore, it was found that the Li target stability was completely within the requirement on average under an Ar pressure of 0.12 MPa. The analysis of measurement results under the IFMIF condition of 10$$^{-3}$$ Pa are ongoing, and they seem almost identical to the result of 0.12 MPa.
